Ankur broadcasted a radio program called Dark Side - Dare to Share starting August 2008 until February 2009 through Gorkha FM. In our program, listeners phone in describing their problems. Our senior counseler at Ankur advised the callers, or invited them to come to Ankur Counseling Center if they had severe problems. We were funded for our broadcasting through the Western Union Foundation (WUF), one of the donors of FNC.
The radio program helped listeners become aware of various types of psychosocial problems. In addition to our on-air assistance, we gained 93 clients and counseled them through 172 sessions. Although we are a child-focused counseling center, only 15% of our new clients were child-related cases. The majority of our clients came with problems such as depression, anxiety, separation anxiety, relationship problems, low academic performance, and low self-esteem, although we did have some cases of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), paranoid disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and social phobia. We used different psychotherapeutic interventions to handle these issues such as cognitive behavior therapy, solution-focused therapy, and behavioral therapy. All of our treatments were successful and the radio program was very popular among listeners. The number of our community clients increased tremendously.
