A Pioneer in Psychological Therapy for Disadvantaged Children in Nepal

Over the years that FNC worked with children, it became apparent that a large percentage of the children being supported had serious psycho-social problems.  Symptoms included depression, anxiety, withdrawal and extreme forms of acting out. As these children were subject to extreme suffering prior to coming to us, this was almost to be expected.

Our Response

As the extent of the need became clearer, NYF and FNC realized that it needed to establish an in-house program that would provide consistent, sustained professional counseling services by trained child psychologists. This culminated in the establishment of the Ankur Counseling Center in February 2006. In Nepali, Ankur means a newly- germinated sprout, something requiring tender loving care, a reference to children and childhood.

Ankur helps children overcome their difficult pasts as well as any academic, behavioral and emotional challenges through counseling and therapy. Ankur also conducts orientation programs for these children on counseling, sex education, bullying, life skills, stress management and many more subjects.

We understand that our efforts alone is insufficient to deal with the problems and so we give trainings to people who have close connection with children such as teachers, parents, house parents, professionals working in child related issues, and counselors themselves.

We also provide internships to the students of psychology from universities. We have highly qualified counselors who hold Masters Degree in Psychology and have years of experience working in this field.

Since 2006 Ankur has provided counselling to over 450 children, and trained over 1,600 child care professionals. There are many successful cases that Ankur has handled through counselling which has proved to be life changing to many.

Towards Sustainability

Ankur has also taken important steps to establish itself as a self-sustaining entity. With the recent expansion of the Ankur team, we have been seeking additional fee-for-service opportunities, for both counselling and training courses, that will enable Ankur to further improve its services to our principal clients and to the community at large.
