About FNC
.
Friends of Needy Children (FNC) is a child-focused non-profit organization registered under Nepal’s Social Welfare Council that works to secure the rights and ensure the welfare of Nepal’s most disadvantaged children and young people. We believe in empowering children by providing appropriate services and opportunities for disadvantaged children when necessary to help create a more just society. We have numerous programs located across Nepal focusing on child protection, nutrition, education, counseling, the abolition of child indentured labor, and children with HIV/AIDS. We collaborate with US-based Nepalese Youth Opportunity Foundation (NYOF) on many of our programs, and are partnered with other international NGO’s such as Action Contre la Faim (ACF), Fonds Parvati Belgium, Art Venture Singapore, and the Western Union Foundation.

The children of Nepal desperately need our help. 51% of Nepal’s population consists of children under the age of 18, but our past decade of violence has left 40,000 children displaced, 8,000 orphaned, hundreds of schools damaged or closed, and many children in dire straits. Infant mortality in Nepal is one of the highest in the world (64 per 1000 live births). According to UNICEF, half of all Nepalese children under the age of five suffer from malnutrition, a preventable condition that can result in lifelong physical and mental problems. Poverty also forces many children to beg on the streets after their parents die or become too sick to care for them. Thousands of Nepali girls are sold or kidnapped each year to serve in the brothels of India, and we estimate 7000-8000 Kamlari girls are still trapped in domestic servitude, sold by their desperate or ignorant parents. Many Nepali children are HIV positive or suffer from AIDS, and even more have disabilities. Both conditions cause the children to be targets of hatred and fear, and few will receive an education.
